ESSAY
Out of Exodus

“The goal I have for myself, my family, and my church is total bible saturation. I expected the Exodus Intensive class to help me with that, but I am shocked just how much it did,” said Mark Balthrop, a pastor in Oklahoma City who attended Theopolis’ recent course on the book of Exodus. “The unique blend of liturgical, social, emotional, and intellectual interaction had an impact I can’t imagine encountering any other way. It was total Bible saturation for the total person, which equips me pastorally to feed the sheep and lambs of Jesus.”

Mark was one of a number of students from across the country who gathered at our new office space and library in Birmingham for our Easter Intensive course on February 15-19.

Theopolis Scholar-in-Residence James Jordan delivered most of the week’s lectures. He began by placing Exodus in its proper biblical and theological context, before going through the details of the book. He not only went through the great events of the book in detail, but also took time to examine the structure of the tabernacle and its contents and showing their former and current significance. Peter Leithart also delivered three lectures on the Exodus theme in Isaiah, the gospels, and the Apocalypse.

“Jim Jordan is a utterly unique Bible teacher, and he was in rare form during our Exodus class,” Leithart said. “Exodus is one of his sweet spots. He did a great job not only of explaining the text, but of showing how practical the book is, even apparently obscure ordinances of Torah and instructions about building the tabernacle. Everyone left the class not only better informed but inspired.”

Each day’s lectures and discussions were punctuated with worship. With Matins beginning the day, Sext before lunch, and Vespers to close the day, all of the learning was surrounded by the singing of psalms and hymns, hearing the bible read and taught, and prayers. Students ate breakfast and lunch together, and during lunch a student read a selection from the church fathers. Certificate students engaged in a lively seminar discussion each afternoon.

You can find some helpful quotes from throughout the week on our Twitter page, and you can also download the liturgy that we use throughout the week HERE. Our upcoming Pentecost Intensive on the Sacraments is coming up in May, and will be taught by Peter Leithart and Leonard Vander Zee.
