PRESIDENT'S ESSAY
Translation, 1 Kings 12:25-13:
POSTED
January 11, 2005

And built Yarav?am Shechem in the hills of Ephraim.
And he lived in it.
And he went out from there
and built Penu?el.
And said Yarav?am in his heart,
?Now returns the kingdom to the house of David.
If this people ascends to make sacrifices in the house of Yahweh in Yerushalaim
And returns the heart of this people to their master, to Rechav?am, king of Yehudah,
And they will kill me
And they will return to Rechav?am, king of Yehudah.?E
And took counsel the king and he made two calves of gold
And he said to them,
?Too much for you from ascending to Yerushalaim.
Behold your gods (Elohim), Yisrael, which caused you to ascend from the land of Mizraim.?E
And he set the one in Beyt-El and the one he gave in Dan.
And it was this thing to sin.
And walked the people before the one until Dan.

A And he made houses of high places.
And he made priests from the borderlands who were not from the sons of Levi.

B And made Yarav?am a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month
As the feast which [was] in Jehudah.

C And he ascended on the altar.
Thus he did in Beyt-El to sacrifice to the calves which he made.

A And he caused to stand in Beyt-El the priests of the high places which he made.
And he ascended on the altar which he made in Beyt-El

B On the fifteenth day in the eighth month
In the month which he made from his own heart.
And he made a feast before Yisrael

And he ascended on the altar
to turn [things] to smoke.
But Look!
A man of Elohim coming from Jehudah by the word of Yahweh to Beyt-El!
And Yarav?am standing on the altar
to turn [things] to smoke.
And he cried against the altar by the word of Yahweh and he said,
?Altar! Altar!
Thus says Yahweh:
?Behold, a son will be born to the house of David
Yo?shiyyahu his name
And he will slaughter/sacrifice on you the priests of the high places
Who turn [things] to smoke on you.
Now bones of man shall be burned on you.??
And he gave in that day an omen, saying,
?This is the omen which Yahweh spoke,
?Behold, the altar will be torn
And poured out the fatty-ashes which are on it.??
And it was according to the hearing of the king
the word of the man of the Elohim which he cried against the altar in Beyt-El
And send Yarav?am his hand from on the altar saying, ?Seize him.?E
And withered his hand which he sent on him
And he was not able to cause it to return to him.
Now the altar was torn
And poured out the fatty-ashes from the altar
According to the omen which the man of the Elohim gave by the word of Yahweh.
And answered the king and said to the man of the Elohim
?Soften, please, the face of Yahweh your God
And pray for me
And return my hand to me.?E
And softened the man of the Elohim the face of Yahweh
And returned the hand of the king to him.
And it was as in the beginning.
And spoke the king to the man of the Elohim,
?Come with me to my house.
And strengthen
And I will give you a gift.?E
And said the man of the Elohim to the king,
?If you give to me half of your house
I will not go with you.
1 And I will not eat bread
And I will not drink water in this place.
For thus commanded me by the word of Yahweh, saying,
?You shall not eat bread
And you shall not drink water
And you shall not return in the way which you walked.??
And he walked in another way
And he did not return in the way which he came on it to Beyt-El.

Now a prophet, an old one, was dwelling in Beyt-El
And came his sons and they reported to him
all the things-done which did the man of the Elohim that day in Beyt-El,
The words which he spoke to the king
And they reported to their father.
And he spoke to them, their father,
?Where is this one the way he walked??E
And his sons saw the way which the man of the Elohim walked, who came from Yehudah.
And he said to his sons,
?Saddle for me the donkey.?E
And they saddled for him the donkey and he rode on it.
And he walked/went after the man of the Elohim
And he found him sitting under the terebinth.
And he said to him
?Are you the man of the Elohim which came from Yehudah??E
And he said, ?I [am].?E
And he said to him,
?Come with me to my house
And eat bread.?E
And he said,
?I am not able to return with you and go with you
2 And I will not eat bread
And I will not drink with you water in this place.?E
For a word [was] to me by the word of Yahweh,
?You shall not eat bread
3 And you shall not drink water there
And you shall not return to walk in the way which you walked on it.??
And he said to him,
?I myself also [am] a prophet just as you are.
And a messenger spoke to me by the word of Yahweh, saying,
4 ?Cause him to return with you to your house.
And he shall eat bread and drink water.??

He lied to him.

And he returned with him
5 And he ate bread in his house
And he drank water.

And it was, they sitting to the table,
And it was the word of Yahweh to the prophet who caused him to return.
And he cried to the man of the Elohim which came from Yehudah, saying,
?Thus says Yahweh,
?Because you have acted obstinately against the mouth of Yahweh
And you have not guarded the commandment
6 which Yahweh your God commanded you:
And you have returned, and eaten bread, and drunk water
In the place which He spoke to you,
7 ?You shall not eat bread
And you shall not drink water?E
[Therefore] your carcass shall not go to the grave of your fathers.??
And it was after his eating and after his drinking
And he saddled for him the donkey to the prophet which caused him to return.
And he walked/went and found him a lion in the way
And he killed him
And his carcass was thrown in the way
And the donkey standing beside him
And the lion standing beside the carcass.
And behold men crossing over
And they saw the carcass thrown in the way
And the lion standing beside the carcass
And they went and spoke in the city which the old prophet was dwelling in it.
And heard the prophet which caused him to return from the way
And he said,
?The man of the Elohim is he
Who acted obstinately against the mouth of Yahweh
And Yahweh gave him to the lion
And he broke him
And he killed him
According to the word of Yahweh which he spoke to him.?E
And he spoke to his sons, saying,
?Saddle for me the donkey.?E
And they saddled it.
And he went/walked and he found his carcass thrown in the way
Now the donkey and the lion standing beside the carcass.
The lion did not eat the carcass
And he did not break the donkey.
And the prophet raised the carcass of the man of the Elohim
And he caused it to rest to the donkey
And he cause him to return
And he came to the city of the old prophet to mourn and to bury him.
And he caused to rest his carcass in his grace
And they mourned on it, ?Oh, my brother.?E
And it was after his burying him and he said to his sons, saying,
?In my dying
And your burying me in the grave which the man of the Elohim was buried in it
Beside his bones cause to rest my bones.
For being shall be the thing/word which he cried by the word of Yahweh
against the altar which [is] in Beyt-El
And against all the houses of the high places
Which [are] in the cities of Shomron.?E
After this thing Yarav?am did not return from the way of evil
And he returned and he made from the borderlands of the people priests of the high places
The one who desired he filled the hand it was the priests of the high places.
And it was by this thing to be come sin of the house of Yarav?am
And to cause it to be destroyed and to cause it to be exterminated
From the face of the earth.
