PRESIDENT'S ESSAY
The Three Orders
POSTED
September 30, 2011

Following up some suggestions by Toby Sumpter on Isaiah 24:2, which lists six pairs of social/religious classes that will be caught up in the devastation that is coming. There’s a sociology assumed and manifested in the verse.

The six pairs are organized into three groups, with a 1 + 2 + 3 numerical organization. One religious relationship, two household relationships (distinguished by gender), and three land-economic relationships.

The groups name three different sorts of relations: Priest and people, servants and masters, several economic relations. These three groups correspond to the triple organization of Israelite space: Sanctuary, home, land, which is a variant of the original sociology of creation - garden, land, world. In the sanctuary, the prime human relation is between priest and people; in the household, the relations are hierarchical, master-servant; the relations in the land are primarily economic.

The last groups is the most numerous and most varied, and it seems to move from relations of equality to more hierarchical relations. Buyer and seller exchange goods, and each benefits. No one is the head and no one the tail. Lender-borrower is a head-tail relationship, more like master-servant than the relation of buyer and seller. The last of the list is the relation of usurer/payer of usury, and thus is even more top-heavy than a simple lender-borrower relation.

When Yahweh comes, the complex social and spatial organization will dissolve. Creation is a series of divisions, and social a collection of boundaries. But when the land is laid waste, all the social and spatial boundaries will collapse. If priest and people become equivalent, that can only mean that the boundaries around the holy space of the temple have become porous. Distinctions of holy and common break down. Within the household, servant and master, maid and mistress, become “like” one another, equalized by the collapse of social order. The hierarchical economic relations also dissolve. Debtors escape debts and try to avoid interest payments. This is the “confusion” that reigns in the city, the confusion from which Yahweh will bring a new order, as He hovered over the tohu of the original creation to bring the world into being, as He hovered over Israel to established Israelite order in the first place.
