John 17:20-23: Jesus said, I do not ask in behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word; that they be one, even as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You, that they may be in us . . . . that they may be one, just as We are one; I in them, and Thou in me, that they may be perfected in unity.
Our God comes as a Mighty Man and as Shepherd to take us up into Himself. He gathers the lambs with His arms and carries them in His bosom, the same bosom in which the eternal Word has been from the beginning. He gives all of Himself to bring us to Himself.
This is what Jesus’ prayer is about.
The Son has always lived in the Father; Jesus wants us to share His home in the Father. The Father has lived in the Son from before the foundation of the world; Jesus wants the Father to make His home in us too.
How? How do we become homes for the Triune Creator? How does the Triune Creator become our home? Mundane as it seems, it happens through words and food. The Father and Son dwell in us by speaking to us in the power of the Spirit. At this table, the Spirit brings us into catches us up to heaven, so we feed on Christ and dwell in the Father and Son.
The good news of Trinity Sunday is: Behold your God. The good news of this table is: Behold yourselves in your God, and God in you.
