Taught by David Field

The way of the cross is the pathway to human maturity and since Christian counselling is a sort of highly customized discipleship we should expect it to be formed by and to reflect the cross.

Specifically, the cross of self-donating death leading to glory-enhancing resurrection life is seen in the shape of redemptive history, the saving work of Christ, and the pattern of Christian discipleship so human renewal in Christ will involve a descent to the depths, a laying down of life, a move towards that from which naturally we shrink, and daily, multi-faceted ego- relinquishment.

This workshop introduces the conceptual and the clinical approaches of psychodynamic Christian counselling in the conviction that, rightly understood and practised, it represents a demonstrably biblical model for counselling-as-discipleship.

Course Outline

Week One:
Gospel foundations; conditionality and relinquishment; the true and false self

Week Two:
The Triangle of Life – a model for psychodynamic Christian counselling-as- discipleship

Week Three:
Further back – the importance of infancy; Deeper down – the power of the unconscious

Week Four:
Repression and spiritual blindness; defence mechanisms and idolatry

Week Five:
Clinical emphases: slowed-down, body-aware, feelings-focussed, presence and honesty

Week Six:
Psychodynamic Christian counselling and liturgy, and the Church; taking things further

The workshop will attend to Theopolis priorities of “Bible | Liturgy | Culture” in seeking to serve the Church with perspectives on discipleship and formation, and on the part which Christian counselling and psychotherapy might play in them. Exercises for personal practice and opportunity for Q&A will be included in each session.
