A long stretch of the Old Testament recounts the life of David, the founding of the Davidic dynasty, and the history of the divided monarchy up to the exile.

This history develops theological categories that are critical to understanding the New Testament: the Davidic king as divine son; the kingdom of God; Israel's division, fall, and hoped-for restoration; the ministry of prophets; Israel's mission among Gentiles; temple and temple worship; and Yahweh's faithfulness to Israel.

Overarching this entire history is Yahweh's utter devotion to the Davidic dynasty, His determination to rescue David and his seed from ruin and to fulfill His intentions for and through them.

In this Theopolis Workshop, Peter Leithart will lead students through the books of 1-2 Samuel, 1-2 Kings, and 1-2 Chronicles. We will examine large-scale structures and themes, and also dig into the details of selected passages.

Throughout the course, we will see how these "historical books" offer a preview of the gospel of David's greater Son, Jesus.
