ESSAY
Theopolis in the UK

Theopolis President Peter Leithart spent the last week of March lecturing on worship and sacraments in England.

He delivered four lectures on liturgy in Bolton, a town north of Manchester, arguing that Christian worship must be worship fit for the king and fit for the kingdom that has come in Jesus. Pastor Arthur Kay of Trinity Presbyterian Church organized and hosted the event.

In a London conference co-sponsored by Emmanuel Training and Resources in Southgate, Leithart gave two sets of lectures on sacramental theology to attendees from a variety of churches. The first series examined the character of sacraments and the relationship of sacraments to “me,” “us,” and “them” – sacraments as an issue of personal piety, as practices of the church, and as the source and shape of the church’s mission.

On Monday, March 30, he lectured and led discussions on sacramental theology for a group of about 30 pastors, seminarians, doctoral students, and laymen.

Organized and hosted by Emmanuel Evangelical Church pastor Steve Jeffery, both events in London were “smashing” successes. Both lecture series will be available on the Emmanuel Resources web site.

This was the first of what we hope to be regular Theopolis conferences and courses in the UK.
